Author's comments:
Here's a game for people who LOVE upgrade systems. Nearly EVERYTHING in the game can be upgraded, including Menu Buttons, Game Graphics, and loads more! You even have to buy your own mute button! Absurd!

How fast can you upgrade EVERYTHING?

P.S. this game looks aweful until you upgrade the graphics, it's intentional :p

Upgrade Complete! is a 2009 Shooter game by The-EXP. Much like Achievement Unlocked, it parodies a common aspect of modern games. In this case, the use of upgrades in such games is exaggerated.

Design Edit

Upgrade Complete Early

A scene from early in the game.

The defining feature of Upgrade Complete! is that everything either can be upgraded or must be bought. This includes pieces for the ship, graphics, buttons, music, and even the preloader. The purpose of the game is to completely upgrade every aspect and beat the twenty levels of shooting. With the exception of the starting $1000, all money is obtained in the shooting aspect of the game.

Gameplay Edit

The actual gameplay in Upgrade Complete! is also based on upgrades. Ships start with two guns attached. However, up to 12 individual guns, missile and lightning launchers, magnets, and speed panels can be added onto the ship. Pieces of the ship can also be sold for money or upgraded to increase their effectiveness. Once
Upgrade Complete Late

By the end of the game, both the ship and the game's graphics have been upgraded.

the action starts, players control the ship at the bottom of the screen and can move left and right to shoot the enemies coming from the top. When an enemy is destroyed, they drop a golden ball that represents money. Enemies, instead of attacking, migrate to the bottom of the screen. If any of the enemies successfully cross the screen, the player fails the level. However, by upgrading their ships between attempts, all enemies can eventually be defeated without much difficulty. The game has a total of 20 levels, which include increasingly endurable and numerous enemies.

Presentation Edit

The graphics and Music of Upgrade Complete are largely remarkable due to the fact that they are among the customizable aspects of the game. The game starts with an extremely simple menu, 8-bit graphics, and no music. As time goes on, players can improve the quality of each of these, superficially changing the game.

Reception Edit

Upgrade Complete! was a critically successful and fairly popular game on Newgrounds. As of January 2011, it has had over 850,000 views and an average review of 9.7/10. It also won the Daily Feature and Weekly Users' Choice awards, and was rated the second best game of June 2009, after Super Mario 63. It was one of the finalists for the Newgrounds Tank Awards.
