Robot Dinosaurs is a Horizontal Shooter game by I-smel. It is known for its ridiculous premise.

Story Edit

The story of Robot Dinosaurs is intentionally ludicrous. One day, two cyborg dinosaurs, "Tyrannosaurus X" and "Dinomite" crash onto Earth. Both robot dinosaurs have jetpacks, can shoot giant lasers out of their mouths, and speak fluent English. They are running low on "Dinoforce" and must fight against a fleet of enemies on Earth. Apparently, defeating the boss at the end of the game saves the Earth and humanity for "another ten jillion years." The two dinosaurs come to the conclusion that humans, like them, are "DINO-TASTIC!"

Design Edit

Robot Dinosaurs has a short, linear design. At the beginning of the game, players can choose to play as either Tyrannosaurus X or Dinomite. However, the two dinosaurs play identically. The player constantly flies from left to right, as in many other horizontal shooters, and must destroy enemies and dodge obstacles. At the end of the game, the player encounters a boss, which makes up about half of the game's short length. It is an eye surrounded by armor, which the player must destroy piece by piece while avoiding enemy attacks. The game is fairly easy by the standards of the genre, which helps the game remain a joke.

Gameplay Edit

Robot Dinosaurs

The beam is the Dinosaur's only weapon.

Considering its extremely short length, Robot Dinosaurs has some surprisingly deep gameplay. The Dinosaurs' flight is controlled by the mouse, and the dinosaur shoots a beam from its mouth when the player left clicks the screen. However, the beam can not be fired at full power endlessly. The top right corner of the screen shows a gauge for the beam's power, which steadily goes down while the dinosaur roars, until the beam becomes powerless. Therefore, the player must strategically switch between attacking and dodging attacks in order to survive. The game also features "Dinotastic" powerups. These appear at set points in the game, and allow the player to fire at max power for a few seconds. The game also features a health system, as well as three extra lives.

Presentation Edit

Robot Dinosaurs features a single long background and relatively few enemy types. However, both dinosaurs have their unique animations, including differently colored beams that they fire. Furthermore, depending on the current strength of the beam, the sound effects can change greatly, from a loud roar to a harsh whisper. The game features music from midimachine and NemesisTheory.

Reception Edit

Robot Dinosaurs was fairly well received on Newgrounds. As of May 2011, it has over 490,000 views and an average review of 9.4/10. The game also won the Daily Feature and Weekly Third Place Awards, and is featured in the Flash Portal History and Shooters Collections. The game was also a nominee for the 2009 Tank Awards.
